The Philadelphia Division will return to Alverthorpe Park for its spring picnic meet on Saturday, June 14, 2025.. The official address of the park is Jenkintown Road and Forrest Avenue, Jenkintown, PA 19046. However the  picnic entrance is on Fox Chase Road (See directions and map above). The gates open at 9:00am and we will begin the festivities at 10am.

First on the agenda is our annual business meeting. Board directors and committee chairmen will deliver their reports, followed by Superintendent Joe Walters discussing the past years events, and then delving into what we have planned for the coming year. Concluding the business meeting will be the announcement of the results of the board of directors election.

For our first clinic, member Fred Monsimer will present an introduction to modeling the iron and steel industry. Railroads have had a long relationship with the iron and steel industry. They haul the materials used to make iron and steel, they make their cars out of those metals. Whether you have the room to build a fully-integrated steel mill or just want to have one carload of I-beams passing through during an operating session, come and see this presentation. You don’t need to build a model of a blast furnace or need a lot of special equipment to introduce steel to your layout. How far you take it is up to you.

Our second presentation will be given by NJ Division member Drew Marshall on Eric Dervinis’s Bloomsburg branch of the DL&W. Sadly Eric passed away recently and close friend Drew wanted to pay tribute to Eric’s extensive involvement in model railroading with a last look at his impressive layout.

All attendees are encouraged to bring a model or project. Toward the end of the meet, we hold a Show & Tell. It’s an open-mike opportunity to share a recently completed project or a glimpse into an in-progress work.

In addition, the Achievement Program Committee is now judging models at the meets. If you wish to have a model judged, please inform either Earl Paine or Joe Walters ahead of time.

As usual we’ll hold our 50/50 raffle, draw for door prizes, and offer coffee, donuts, and Philly soft pretzels. Following the morning program, we will indulge in hot dogs, hamburgers, and other picnic goodies. After lunch, model railroads in the area will be open for visitation. Please come and join us for fun and feast.
