April Meet Recap

Elkins Station_Scanned_Card_2

Our early spring meet returned to the Elkins Park Train Station, on April 9, 2016. Located on the SEPTIC Warminster and West Trenton lines (historically the North Penn Branch of the Reading Company), the station building itself has been unused by SEPTIC for over ten years but the trains still stop there. The schedule can be found on the SEPTIC website at: http://septa.org/schedules/rail/index.html.

As usual the meet was opened with greetings from our Superintendent, Joe Bergmaier.

Our two clinicians, Mike Dettinger from Philly and Barry Rosier from Jersey jointly presented two clinics for the attendees’ enjoyment:

1. Tunnel Liners: A Discussion on Design, Material Selection, and Techniques
2. Turnout Controls: An Examination of Manual, Electric, and DCC Control Methodologies

Accompanying these fine clinics was the usual fare: Model display table, white elephant table, 50/50 raffle, door prizes, and coffee, donuts and Philly pretzels. The raffle was once again won by Kevin Feeney. (I really have to figure out his system).

Two clubs hosted open houses: The Chelten Hills MRR Club, a few blocks away, and GATSME in their new home in Rockledge. Their layout track plan has been finalized and the building renovation is nearing completion. An interesting note: Their bathrooms are identified not by sex, but by railroad, i.e. Reading vs PRR. In the interest of maintaining political correctness, members and guests may use the facility which more closely represents their prototype preference on that particular day. In addition, member Ted Fort was kind enough to host attendees at his beautifully detailed layout.

The meet turnout (no pun intended) was excellent and folks appeared to enjoy themselves. Please don’t miss our next event at the Newtown Public Library in Newtown Square, PA on June 11, 2016.
